President Obama presses Congress for stimulus...RNC goes black...Serena wins 10th Grand Slam...Tomlin leads Pittsburgh into Superbowl XLIII

Black is beautiful. On the eve of Black History month it appears that every facet of American life is finally embracing the notion of black beauty, seriously. Just look around and you will find black people in this country living life out loud for a change. "Say it loud! I'm black and I'm proud!" Not since the 1960s and 1970s has the spirit of black nationalism and pride been so high.

President Obama presses Congress for stimulus...
The nation is celebration of the historic election and inauguration of the first African-American as president is fading as the economic climate in the country continues to worsen. President Obama's role is so important not only in modern black history but American history as well. In the face of two wars abroad, a deepening recession at home and a country still yearning for governmental change, he is doing his best to carefully walk through the valley of the shadows and not fear the evil. His $819 billion stimulus package narrowly passed through the House of Representatives earlier this week and without a single Republican vote even after he made good on his campaign promise to reach across party lines. He visited with the House Republicans earlier this week in hopes of garnering their support for his plan but to no avail. Mr. President I commend you for your efforts but I wasn't surprised that they didn't vote to invest in America. The Republican creed for some time concerning spending has been unless it is for defense the answer is "No." The bill now rests in the hand of the Senate before he will have a chance to sign it into law and get the country moving again. Hopefully, the members of the Senate will support an investment in a domestic cause that is not partisan and help us in a more positive direction.

RNC goes black!!
Not to be out done by the Democrats who successfully broke the nations' color barrier with the historic nomination of the first black candidate last year, the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele as the new chairman yesterday. No disrespect to Mr. Steele who is a charismatic moderate conservative, his surprising election as chairman is drawing some criticism. But, these are very different times in America and black folk are stepping up to the plate and etching some mighty bold strokes on the pages of the new American history books. Steele's first is a sign that change has come to the GOP and they want you to think that whatever the left can do the right will try to do a little better. We will see. We will see. Congratulations Mr. Steele like President Obama you've got a lot of work ahead of you too!!

Serena wins 10th Grand Slam

Tennis sensation Serena Williams became the only the fourth woman ever to win 10 grand slam titles in the 41-year Open era today. Reports say she completely dismantled her Russian opponent Dinara Safin in just 59 minutes for the straight sets (6-0, 6-3) Austrailian Open victory. Serena has been proving the naysayers wrong on the court since her father Richard started both Serena and her champion sister Venus on their road to tennis glory on the tough streets of Compton. A jubliant Williams reflected on the significance of her accomplishment after the match. "I wanted to get to 10," Serena said of her milestone. "You never know what happens in life. I feel like, you know, opportunities sometimes don't present themselves twice." She is another shining chocolate example of the change that is sweeping the country and the world.

Tomlin leads Pittsburgh into Superbowl XLIII

The world will be watching tomorrow as second year head coaching phenom Mike Tomlin leads the vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers into Superbowl XLIII against the Cinderella Arizona Cardinals. Understandably optimistic Tomilin and the Steelers boasts a top ranked tenacious defense that seeks to crush the glass slipper of the high flying Cardinals and win a record sixth Superbowl title. At only 35, Tomlin is making history as just the third black head coach to guide a team to the NFL championship game. They will face a formidable opponent in Capt'n Kurt Warner and the Cardinals high flying offense. Coach Tomlin and his staff must contain the passing game of the former Superbowl MVP because if he gets a rhythm the sky is the limit with those gazelle-like receivers Bouldin and Fitzgerald. The Steelers are hopeful they will be successful enough in their offensive and defensive efforts to hoist the Lombardi trophy helping Mike Tomlin ink another stroke on the new black American history page. To be black in America right now has to feel like the playing fields of life are finally leveling.

Wintery life on campus

I snapped these pictures this morning on the Richland College campus. They are a couple of the final wintery scenes of the frozen Texas tundra before it all melts away under the balmy Southern temperatures. We typically only get a day or so of the frosty stuff in between the sweltering days of Summer and Fall in North Texas so this was pretty special.

Longhorns outlast Bears 78-72 for 23rd straight time

WACO - Texas coach Rick Barnes has never lost to Baylor. Tonight the scrappy Bears (15-5) gave coach Barnes and the number 11th ranked Longhorns (15-4) a serious run for their money but fell short of the victory before a frenzied crowd at the Ferrell Center, 78-72. The loss marks the 23rd consecutive in the series for Baylor over the last 11 years against Barnes. The win also improves the Longhorns record to 4-1 in Big 12 conference play and 15-4 overall. Texas senior guard AJ. Abrams (3) led the team in scoring with 19 points. He also tied a Big 12 record with his 338th made 3-pointer early in the game. Unfortunately, he did not score another three in the game so he must share the record with Jeff Boschee who played at Kansas in the nineties for now.

An off shooting night from behind the arc by Tweety Carter, Curtis Jerrells and Henry Dugat of the Bears aided in the Longhorns win. The normally sensational Baylor guard trio were only 5-16 collectively from 3-point range. Still Baylor was only down four at 74-70, when Abrams foolishly fouled Carter behind the arc. With a chance to bring the game to within a basket before an eager home crowd Carter could not get any of his three free-throws to fall. Quincy Acy secured the rebound of his third miss and was fouled. He knocked down both of his free-throws bringing the Bears to within a bucket at 74-72 but they would get no closer. The Texas Longhorns did not fair much better at the charity stripe in the final seconds but managed to push enough freebies across the lip of the rim to secure the win. Dogus Balbay split his four attempts and Connor Atchley hit both of his to provide the final margin of victory. Texas next plays at home against the Kansas State Wildcats, Sat Jan 31st at 4pm.

Chinese hope year of the OX is better than Rat of last!!!

The new year is a time when everyone hopes for prosperity. The people of China begin to celebrate their lunar new year today signaling the end of a horribly ratty last year. The Year of the Ox follows the Year of the Rat. Many Chinese people hope this year is more bullish in prosperity compared to last year. With massive job losses and rampart scandals in many of their export businesses, the Chinese economy like it's big brother in America, is in the stupor and their people are hoping that brighter days are ahead.

The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. The Chinese celebrate the new year far differently that we do in the West. Instead of one drunken night of reflection and reveille they get potentially 15. Not really. Their elongated celebration is filled with religion and tradition.

The first day of the Lunar New Year is "the welcoming of the gods of the heavens and earth." Many people abstain from meat on the first day of the new year because it is believed that this will ensure long and happy lives for them. On the second day, the Chinese pray to their ancestors as well as to all the gods. They are extra kind to dogs and feed them well as it is believed that the second day is the birthday of all dogs. The third and fourth days are for the sons-in-laws to pay respect to their parents-in-law. The fifth day is called Po Woo. On that day people stay home to welcome the God of Wealth. No one visits families and friends on the fifth day because it will bring both parties bad luck. On the sixth to the 10th day, the Chinese visit their relatives and friends freely. They also visit the temples to pray for good fortune and health.

The seventh day of the New Year is the day for farmers to display their produce. These farmers make a drink from seven types of vegetables to celebrate the occasion. The seventh day is also considered the birthday of human beings. Noodles are eaten to promote longevity and raw fish for success. On the eighth day the Fujian people have another family reunion dinner, and at midnight they pray to Tian Gong, the God of Heaven. The ninth day is to make offerings to the Jade Emperor. The 10th through the 12th are days that friends and relatives should be invited for dinner. After so much rich food, on the 13th day you should have simple rice congee and mustard greens (choi sum) to cleanse the system.

The 14th day should be for preparations to celebrate the Lantern Festival which is to be held on the 15th night. (University of Victoria)

What were you thinking??...SUBWAY BANDIT CAUGHT ON TAPE

I saw this video posted on the MSNBC.com website last week. Hopeful to make a difference, I had to post something about this type of lunacy. The bold and brazen hold up by a young black man of a Subway restaurant down Boca Raton, FL struck me as disturbing and depressing.

In the wake of the monumental inauguration of the nation's first African American president, I wanted to send a clear message to the segments of the country that seek to do harm to others to advance their own selfish motives. STOP THE MADNESS!! YOU ARE ONLY HURTING YOURSELF!! THE LIFE YOU SAVE JUST MAY BE YOUR OWN!! Americans are tired of your blatant disrespect of our values and our pursuit of happiness. We are all facing a tough time in this economy but resorting to armed robbery is not the way to recovery. In fact only that armed robbery leads to is a one-way to jail or the morgue!!

Wake up people!! Like 7-up cola never had any caffiene, crime never has and never will pay!!!

WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY!! YES WE DID!!

It's a bright and shining 1st day in a new America!! President Barack Obama took the official oath of office yesterday and the country, some say the world, changed forever. We will remember this moment as period in time when we as an American people banded together to reach out and helped each other do something truly historic. We are in the toughest economic climate of any era since the Great Depression. The number of Americans that have lost their jobs is both staggering and sobering. It is with the spirit of our forebears of that resourceful generation, that we begin a fantastic trek into the beyond, daring to leave our own indelible mark on the fabric of this nation.

Unfortunately, I did not get to attend the inaugural celebration in Washington D. C. no, I spent my morning re-registering for spring classes at Richland College. The significance of the moment permeated the atmosphere of the entire campus. Every person that wanted to ceremony was able to witness to the greatest triumph for American race relations since the demolition of Jim Crow. As I waited patiently in line to pay my tuition for my classes, President Obama was sworn in and then he took the podium as President of the United States, for the first time. He then proceeded to talk to the nation and the world, delivering his most profound declaration that "change" has finally come to America. From on that moment and throughout his inaugural address, the silence that surrounded the registration office inside Thunderduck Hall was unmistakable. The nation stood still as he spoke about the amazingly challenging job we are all beginning together. With President Obama's inspirational words engulfing my entity, I was moved to capture some of the day with my hand cam to share my experience on the day a black man became president.

CHANGE HAS COME AMERICA!!!

After leaving campus the magnitude of the moment continued to build up inside of me so, I turned on the cam again while I drove to share my message of hope for the future for myself and this transcendent country .

Yes we can!!

NFL Playoffs: Final four teams square off for coveted Superbowl berth

The NFL championship round is set this weekend and this year's finalists come in playoff tested and ready to give it all for the right to play for Lombardi trophy in Tampa Feb 1. Here is my take on the two games.

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Philadelphia vs. Arizona (+4)

The NFC title game features a Thanksgiving Day rematch between the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles had just come off an embarrassing tie with the Bengals and a 38-6 shellacking at the hands of the Ravens that saw their star quarterback Donovan McNabb benched. At 6-5-1, the Eagles were left for dead by many but somehow found a way to pick up the pieces and devoured the NFC West champs 48 -13 before a national holiday audience. They have been flying high ever since going 5 -1 including the playoffs only stumbling in the Ravens game.

The Arizona Cardinals have been a different team since that late November game. They have been a team searching for it's identity going 2-3 to end the season with dismal defeats at home and on the road. Surprisingly resilient, these Cards have found ways to win in the playoffs downing the Falcons and Panthers in consecutive weeks. Led by the ageless wonder Capt. Kurt Warner (37), they look poised to do what no other Cardinals team has done since 1947 and that's win the NFL championship (better known today as the NFC championship) to become league champs. Since the NFL and AFL merger the Cardinals have not had any significant playoff success before the two leagues combined they had won NFL titles in 1925 and 1947. They had only one playoff game under the current format before year's remarkable run to host the NFC championship game.

The game looks like it will be entertaining and has a potential to be high scoring on both sides as the blitzing Eagles D could be exploited by the crafty Warner. I know there are going to be a lot folks out there that will think I am crazy but I am taking the Cardinals to pull off the upset at home. Clancy Pendergrast's underrated 4-3 defense masterfully contained the high flying attacks of the Falcons and Panthers. They will be at full strength and will find ways to make the plays to stop the Eagles on third down to win the game handily.

Prediction: Arizona 23 - Philly 17

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Baltimore (+6) vs. Pittsburgh

Defense will be the story of the day in the AFC title game. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin comes into the championship game holding all the cards. With the league's top ranked defense, home-field advantage and a 2-0 record against the Ravens this season the Steelers are set to continue their dominance over Ray Lewis and the fearsome Baltimore Ravens. The third installment of the Steelers vs. Ravens promises to be a hard nosed defensive affair but the Steelers should find it extremely daunting securing the trifecta over their division rival.

In their second game in mid-December, the Steelers got the tough road win in Baltimore 13-9. Some say it was an early Christmas gift from the officials because of a controversial touchdown call late in the 4th quarter with time running down. With just over three and half minutes remaining in the game the Steelers began their final drive from their 8-yard line. They moved methodically down the length of the field to the Ravens 14. After two incompletions the Steelers came up with play that is still being disputed on both coasts. On third-and-four, Roethlisberger scrambled, and hit Holmes just across the goal line for the touchdown, putting the Steelers up 13-9 and securing the win. With only 43 seconds remaining, the play was reviewed because while Holmes caught the ball with his feet in the end zone the nose of the football never crossed the goal line. Later referee Walt Coleman said, "He had two feet down. When he gained control of the ball, the ball was breaking the plane."

The improbable win secured the AFC North title and home-field advantage in the playoffs for the Steelers. They have been clicking on all cylinders since making just enough plays when it counts to win games late and keep their season alive. Baltimore's standout rookie quarterback Joe Flaco looks to become only the second rookie to win the AFC Championship in his first year. Ben Roethlisberger did it first. Pittsburgh has the more complete team and should win a close game late.

Prediction: Steelers 20 - Ravens 10

DMX got his sign...says his true calling is to preach to God's people.

I got this bit of news watching the infamous TMZ show last night. They only played a snippet of the interview so, I searched the entire MyFoxPhoenix.com news website today for the full interview (click the MyFoxPhoenix link to view the video). I was enlightened by the apparent courage and conviction of rapper Earl Simmons best known as DMX or X. He confesses to Fox 10 reporter John Hook, that his experiences in Arizona and at the Maricopa County Jail have helped shape his new outlook on life. X, is not the first jailhouse convert to find Jesus and he sure won't be the last but, something in his voice is different this time. He projects the characteristics of a changed man on a mission to do the work of God.

Saved by his celebrity?? NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin is thankful that he played for God's favorite team!!

Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin said he was nearly carjacked Monday night -- until the would-be robbers recognized him. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

With the Dallas Cowboys out of the playoffs again and the other Dallas area sports teams (Stars, Rangers and Mavericks) also having less newsworthy seasons, some are calling the report by Irvin a hoax. Illustrator Mike O'Neil posted on my Facebook wall today, "Like most, I call BS on this whole story. He's trying to drum up an audience for his failing radio show." Hmph* If it is a hoax, then the former player turned journalist stands to lose a ton of creditability with his base group of fans.

Phoenix squeaks by Atlanta...Shaq-ovic ends free throw streak

PHOENIX- The Phoenix Suns defeat the Atlanta Hawks 107-102 tonight on the strength of a dominating performance from their star center Shaquille O'Neal (26 pts, 10 rebs). I didn't watch the game but saw the highlights on Sportscenter. The Suns continued their recent success in the areas of team execution and are a testament to the veterans on the team and their head coach Terry Porter. The surprisingly hack-o-Shaq proof O'Neal aka Shaq-ovic ended his consecutive free throw streak at 12 but quickly started another one after the miss. This Phoenix team is proving that it can and will be competitive and relevant come playoff time. Hopefully for Phoenix fans, they will have a better ending this year!!

Pres. Bush has final press interview...Eight years later same old Bush!!

Okay, this is going to be the only blog about the outgoing president. The 43rd U. S. President George W. Bush gave his final press conference as the "Decider" yesterday and I must say that if "If dumb was dirt, he'd cover about an acre or 40." But, for a minimum of seven more days and diligently counting he is the commander-in-chief. Mr. Bush, the America that you are bequeathing to Barack Obama is much more disorganized, disoriented and disenfranchised than ever before and you are the ringmaster, orator extraordinaire of destruction and divisiveness. As a veteran of the armed forces, I will always be torn by the misfortune and senseless loss of vibrant American life caused by the failed call to war tactics thrust upon the American people that led this country into a sovereign nation to overthrow their vicious dictator. Don't get me wrong, I think the president did a few things with courage but he often responded to other domestic issues with cowardice in my opinion. His final interview response to the questions about progress in New Orleans after the hurricane only trumpet to the heavens the tenor of his presidency in my opinion. Ultimately, I believe that the history makers will be gentle when they surmise his legacy and litany of errors while in office. I bid you farewell "Dubya". Goodbye and good riddance!

FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN COACH TO WIN SUPERBOWL STEPS DOWN!!

“There are things that we never want to let go of, people we never want to leave behind. But keep in mind that letting go isn't the end of the world, it's the beginning of a new life." Yesterday, a truly inspirational Christian, father, mentor and coach decided it was time to move on.

"I think I've got a responsibility to be home a little bit more, be available to my family a little bit more and do some things to help make our country better," Dungy said. "I don't know what that is right now, but we'll see." (CBSsports.com)

Tony Dungy is the epitome of the word role-model. In a time where winning at all costs lead some in the ranks of coaching to be verbally abusive, contrite, and darn right cantankerous at times, Dungy proved that winning in life was everything not football. He will leave behind a long outstanding legacy after a 31-year NFL career that began as Superbowl champion with the Steelers in the 70's to becoming the first African-American head coach to win it all and hoist the Lombardi trophy in 2006. Tony Dungy is the kind of guy that I would want to coach my son's team because if he never won a game or if he never scored a touchdown, he would still be a winner for having known such a great inspirational man. Happy trails coach, you will be missed!!!

Vindicated!! Burris gets his seat!!

Justice is a dish served with a pickle!! The Secretary of the Senate ruled today that embattled Senate nominee Rowland Burris has acquired the required paperwork to become the Senator-designee from Illinois. Finally, justice for a truly honorable man who found himself in the midst of the horrible scandal that is Gov. Rod "The Hair" Gov. Blagojevich. The Senate Democrats saw past their own noses approving him after receiving a rubber stamped letter from the Illinois secretary of the state and his original nomination papers from recently impeached Gov. Blagojevich.

Congratulations Senator-designee Roland Burris!!!

Rickey Henderson is elected to MLB Hall of Fame

Braggadocios on and off the field Rickey Henderson used his spectacular play on the field to back up his bad attitude off!! Today he was elected to the 2009 Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Fame class in just his first year of eligibility. Guess sometimes stealing is good!!! The 10-time All-Star and all-time MLB base stealing record holder, dominated the base stealing game for nearly 20 years finishing at or near the top in bases stolen from 1980- 1998.

“You have to keep running. I always believed I was going to be safe.” ~ Rickey Henderson

Lakers extinguish Heat, 108-105 improve to 30-6

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Lakers outlasted a valiant effort from the Miami Heat to win their 30th game of the season. Playing again without out Lamar Odom for who was sidelined with a bruised right knee for a third straight game the Lakers rode their big man and their bench to the victory. Paced by the rejuvenated play of their young center Andrew Bynum (24pts, 6rebs, 2asts) the Lakers took control of the contest early and held on for the win because they played together as a team. After the game, guard Derek Fisher was geeked about the team's prospects for the rest of the season after their sizzling start. "What's really exciting, is how good we are going to be when everyone gets back." But the Lakers didn't need Lamar tonight.

The featured match-up of Wade against Bryant didn't materialize until the fourth quarter when Kobe appeared to get his game going. He finished with 19 points and 7 assists. Heat guard Dwayne Wade tried desperately to keep his team within striking distance on the road scoring 27 points and grabbing 9 boards.

The former Olympic teammates hadn't shared the court since the Lakers lost heart breaker to the Wade and the Heat late last year in Miami, this time Bryant and the Lakers returned the favor on their home court.

Headache*

As the final seconds ticked off the clock and the Lakers clinging to a one point lead 106-105 Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade clashed skulls that drew blood from Bryant. On the same play and seven seconds remaining in the game, Wade somehow found a wide open Chris Quinn for a game winning three pointer but unfortunately for the Heat, Quinn's attempt fell harmlessly short of the rim and they would not get any closer.

Dallas officer killed serving warrant in South Oak Cliff

DALLAS - Area police remain on high alert following the shooting of a 17 year veteran Gang Unit officer on Tuesday. While trying to serve a felony warrant, the officer and husband was gunned down in an area in well known for violence and open drug activity. Senior Cpl Norman Smith would have celebrated his 18th year anniversary on the force Wednesday. Sadly, the residents of the low-income Oak Wood Place Apartments, located in the northeast corner of South Oak Cliff where the officer was shot, are far too familiar with drugs, gun play and gangs.

In these tough economic times everyone is having to make tough decisions on just about everything. The nation's jobless rates are at all time highs, food prices are out of control and many families are struggling just to survive. Jacobia Jackson a young resident of the property said, "We moved here to save money, But it isn't worth it." (DMN)
The troubled complex is one of many that is owned by politically connected entrepreneur Alex Stolarski. According to the article in the Dallas Morning News, the property owned by Stolarski doesn't have any code compliance violations currently but they have had a very lengthy history of them in the past. Stolarski serves on the city's Committee on Productivity and Innovation as the appointee of Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia. Garcia has received $5,000 in campaign donations from Stolarski since 2001. She initially defended him as "an owner who addresses problems on his properties" but to her credit she later said in the article that if she found out that he "hasn't run his properties properly" that she would "return his money and ask him to resign from the committee." Right on, Mayor Pro Tem Garcia!! Give him his money back and kick him off the committee that will show him. Yeah Right!

The problem for the residents of the Oak Wood Place Apartments is that what he has done for the complex has not been enough to curb the violence and crime in their neighborhood. Many are fed up and are considering moving out of the complex and hope to see it shutdown. "I hear shooting every other night, right outside my windows," said Bridgette Sneed, 49, who lives there with her elderly parents. "Enough is enough. Something needs to be done about it." (DMN)
The Dallas area and surrounding suburbs are seeing beefed up patrols in their neighborhoods after the tragic shooting of Senior Cpl. Smith. Marked and unmarked cars can be seen canvasing the areas in search for all types of violations from expired registration or inspection stickers to broken headlights and failing to use proper signals for lane changes. They are also placing a much greater emphasis on rounding up those individuals with outstanding warrants and no insurance. On January 1st, the Uninsured Motorist Ordinance went into effect in Dallas. The ordinance states that if a person is stopped in Dallas without proper liability insurance they will be ticketed and their vehicle towed at their expense no questions asked!!

Is the fight for marriage the best fight for the Gay/Lesbian commnity right now?

DALLAS - A lively debate on the topic of gay marriage was raised today on the popular NPR show Tell Me More . The discussion included a broad dialogue on several different Gay Rights issues. The central premise for the show was whether it was the right time or not for the fight for marriage rights when there were so many other noble causes that cry for some needed attention in the gay/lesbian communities.

The conversation included a panel of political bloggers and journalists that were gay and each of them gave riveting commentaries and perspectives with regard to their personal journeys concerning the gay/lesbian right to marriage. One of the more vocal members of the panel, Jasmyne Cannick struck quite a cord as the discussion wrapped due to time restraints that still resonates in the air. She quipped over one of the other panelist who was caucasian. She was concerned that every time gays/lesbians need to explain an issue that is being championed as one that is related to their civil rights they reach to the African-American experience to articulate their point. The sister was extremely verbose in her deviant stance that the issue of gay marriage although an important and one that she wanted accomplished, was not one of the more pressing issues that should be focused upon so heavily at this time by top Gay/Lesbian activist groups in her opinion. She also hit on another topic that was of significant interest to the panelist discussion. She wanted to know why wasn't there being more done to reach out to the African-American community to educate them more about the gay and lesbian way of life.

The obviously passionate debate for and against this important cause got me thinking about the core issue center to the discussion of marriage. Religion. The popular interpretation of the passage in the New Testament(Matthew 19:3-9) that deals specifically with the subject of marriage and divorce, seems to lead followers of the faith to believe that marriage constitutes one man and one woman.
As a Christian I share the belief that marriage is supposed to be between one man and one woman but I struggle with the overall topic marriage and divorce in my own walk of faith so I am in no way an authority on the matter. Recently, I re-married the love of my life Tanya for a variety of factors, but mostly for traditional Christian reasons. We decided that it was "better to marry than to burn." We were re-married in a simple ceremony that we planned in less than a week and executed to perfection. My cousin, Pastor Whitney Foster, an ordained minister in West Dallas made the trip to Garland and presided over our nuptials, which took place on the lawn of Sam Houston Middle school in Garland. My son Reggie's 7th grade team had their season opening basketball game at the school later that November evening so things were nice, neat and cheap! Lost in our simplistic event was the fact that at one time African-Americans were not allowed to marry anyone of their choosing in this country, which struck me as morally wrong and down right racist.

So what's the big deal?

By now, a vast majority of us can probably say that we have a gay family member(s) or gay friend(s) or classmate(s) that have shown us a few things and has adjusted one or more of our stereotypical thoughts about being gay. In an effort to be brief the following list contains five universal things that I have learned from the admittedly few number of gay/lesbian people that I have encountered so far in my lifetime:

1. Being gay is not a communicable disease. So, if a gay person gets around you, you aren't susceptible to getting the gay-itis.

2. Being gay is not a perversion that permeates the mind of a child any more negatively than a boot-shaking rap video. If your kid knows how to "pop lock and drop it" then you know what I mean.

3. Gay people are some of the most dependable, charismatic and devoted individuals that you will ever have the pleasure of knowing.

4. Gay people are willing to share details about their struggles in life and listen to yours, if you will only respectfully take the opportunity to get to know them.

5. Gay people are not going away.

Whether now is the right time or not for the gay marriage fight is still up for debate but as one of the panelist correctly pointed out about the struggle gay marriage is legal in two states and they have civil unions in many others so the fight is not a losing one. In many cases it is one that they are winning one state, one vote at a time.

Rejected by Senate Burris remains optimistic

CAPITOL HILL - The lame-duck appointee and would be junior senator from Illinois, Roland W. Burris arrived on Capitol Hill today and was shown the hand

by the secretary of the Senate, Nancy Erickson. Her rejection prohibited Burris from being seated in the United States Senate.

Mr. Burris has been facing mostly Democratic opposition since he was nominated by embattled Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich on December 30, 2008.

The New York Times reported in their online edition today, Illinois secretary of state, Jesse White, has refused to sign, saying the appointment is invalid because of a federal corruption investigation surrounding the governor and what prosecutors describe as his efforts to sell the Senate seat, vacated by Mr. Obama.

Refusing to accept the denial, Burris marched out of the Senate chambers and proclaimed from across the street before a full-throated media assembly, “Members of the media, my name is Roland Burris, the junior senator from the State of Illinois.” Technically, he has a point but until the cloud of negativity that surrounds Gov. Blagojevich has been settled he will just have to wait outside.

Cold weather blues...

DALLAS- There is an old saying that says, "When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade." With that sentiment in mind I sought out a way to brighten my mood considering the weather was not helping. I have a case of the cold weather blues. The beginning to the new year had been remarkably mild in my area with spring like (almost summer like) temperatures in Texas. Today those sunny rays were gone, replaced instead with cold, gloomy and flu-inducing ones more akin to the winter season.

Today was bleak and colorless filled with bitter reminders of the solemn insipid death that awaits the earth and everything in it. I am a visual optimist so I routinely look deep to see the bigger picture in most things to enhance my own perception and general outlook. I am routinely awe-struck by the extremely beautiful North Texas sunsets as I head home from the office. I wanted to share some of these majestic sights that I was able to capture back in mid-November on my Kodak MD853.Now with picturesque visions of avoiding accidents on the road as I navigated the slick streets, I posted a comment on my Facebook page referring to the bad mix that is slick wet weather and Texas drivers. Heavy rain drenched the roads all day. Thankfully, the high temperature peaked around 40 so there was no major chance for icing on the bridges. By the time rush hour hit, the streets were still too slick from all of the precipitation for the usual raceway driving experience and most smart defense drivers were able to navigate home without any problems. But unfortunately, there were still several wrecks on the major highways. As concerns about icy bridges and overpasses rose those in the areas south of Dallas were on alert. However, those concerns were minimal because the overall ground temperature was just too high for any major glazing of the roadways. Overall the day was pretty uneventful and tomorrow promises warmer temperatures and clearer skies as forecasters are predicting a return to the 70s by Friday. I love being a Texan!!

Prince doesn't vote...religion to blame

Photo of Prince at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in 2008 by Spencer Weiner/Los Angeles Times

LA Times reporter Ann Powers was given a very dubious interview with the reclusive artist Prince recently. The soft-spoken celebrity and artist once referred to by only a trademarked symbol commented on a number of things but one of his most profound comments had to do with his religion and politics. He professed that the reason he did not vote in the 2008 presidential election was because of his religion as a Jehovah Witness. "I didn't vote for Obama either," he explained. "Jehovah's Witnesses haven't voted for their whole inception." (LAT)

To the victors go the spoils...Ole Miss dominates to win Cotton Bowl...MISS 47- TECH 34

DALLAS- Houston Nutt's Ole Mississippi Rebels squad was poised and impressive in their come from behind win in the 73rd and last Cotton Bowl at the State Fair of Texas site, over a valiant Mike Leach and Texas Tech today. "It's starts with defense!!" said a jubilant Coach Nutt after the game in his on the field interview with Fox Sports Jeanne Zelasko. He made good on his promise to seniors and got his team a trip to the post-season and a remarkable bowl game victory in just his first year at the school. His scrappy team finished second in the South Eastern Conference Western Division to Alabama.

Slowing down the Red Raiders was made a little easier for the Rebels as Michael Crabtree and Harrell were not able to hook up enough as the phenomenal wide receiver was limited with an ankle scoring only two yard touchdown in the middle of the second quarter. The Rebels defense turned in an all-around effort and was able stymie the raider attack with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Turnovers in bowl games are many times the affect of over excitement and inexperience but scoring touchdowns is something that senior Graham Harrell is known for in his stellar college career. Playing in his final game he had a good game throwing his NCAA record 134th touchdown but, he faced a furious rush from Mississippi and was not afforded the opportunity to succeed down the field because of Crabtree's notable limitations. Blogger JOHN393996 blogged on an ESPN blog after the game, "TEXAS TECH. SHOULD PLAY ALL THERE GAMES AT HOME. BECAUSE ON THE ROAD THERE A JOKE. SEE IF TECH COULD PLAY AT HOME ALL THE TIME. THEN THEY WOULD BE NATIONAL CHAMPS." I thought that was a spot-on expert opinion. The Red Raiders are really, really good at home (6-0) as are most college teams but, they are suspect on the road and seem to fall apart on the main stage away from home (4-1). With the cards on the table and the #1 ranking on the line they were stopped again with good defense from the now #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

It was a picturesque day in Dallas with clear blue skies and plenty of sun, the high temperature was well above 70 degrees. My family and I spent most of the day enjoying the sun and spring like temperatures. We were torn on who we thought would win the final game at the Cotton Bowl Stadium. After the Red Raiders, beat my beloved Longhorns I have to admit I was elated to see them go down today. Coach Nutt is a master game innovator and motivator so I was not surprised that his team was tenacious on defense.

My son Reggie is an avid NCAA 2008 gamer and wanted the Red Raiders to win. He left early to play basketball after Red Raiders went up 14-0 in the first quarter. I ran an errand with my wife during half time and came home late in the third quarter to see the Rebels ahead big, 38-21. They were steam rolling to the end zone again as the fourth quarter started and the game appeared to change when Tech was able to score making the game interesting at 38-28 with over twelve minutes to play. Ole Miss also fumbled the ball deep in Tech territory but their tough defense did not miss a beat as they were able to quickly sack Harrell forcing a safety. Ole Miss took the next drive in for another big touchdown and put the game out of reach at 47 - 28. Tech would get a garbage touchdown late in the fourth but failed to convert on a two point conversion and then their lineman went out bonkers forcing them to try a desperation onside kick inside of the 10 yard line. But to no avail because the Ole Miss squad was fixed on taking the game after their stumble in the first half. Congratulations to the Rebels and their fans!!

America will be more fit in 2009 thanks to President-Elect Obama

Alex Brandon / AP
DALLAS- As the 2009 New Year continues its dawning, America is continuing a of journey towards change that began in earnest on November 4th, 2008 with the historic landslide electoral college election of Barack Hussein Obama. The newly elected president and athletic father of two will provide a daily reminder to all of us Americans that "active participation" involves getting up from the desk or couch and actually breaking a sweat. "We're a very sports-loving country and it would be unusual if our president in one way or another was not sports connected," said Stephen Hess, a presidential scholar who served in the Eisenhower and Nixon administrations. (Espn.com) With a poor economy and bleak outlook overall domestically many Americans will surely resolve this year to spend less and find ways to reduce our carbon footprint while also shedding some unwanted pounds.

As one should expect of the man who will soon be the leader of the free world, president-elect Obama has a rigorous daily schedule that must include time for his workout or he will not be the cool character that we see behind the microphone during his press conferences. For at least 48 days in a row during and after the campaign, his day has included at least 90 minutes in the gym. An hour and a half, may seem like only a short period of time or an eternity depending on your physical fitness level but, the reward of maintaining a daily work routine is something utterly vital to the success of the youngest elected president of our time.

His commitment to staying in shape is a testament to his ability to manage stress and maintain a clear mind. As a veteran of the armed forces, I have to respect a man that has the intestinal fortitude that it takes to commit to a daily regime that includes being physically fit. Since my days in the military, working out and staying in shape has always been a way to escape for me as well. It has also assisted with me working through life challenges and also helps me assess the opportunities that lay ahead. I was astonished to find out that president-elect Obama also uses his work out time to reflect and work out the some of his most perplexing life challenges.

Obama, who favors a post-workout snack of a protein bar and organic iced tea, has already disclosed some of his own plans for his new home. He wants to build a full basketball court where he can hold games on the White House grounds, and to maintain his usual routine of exercising at least six days a week.

It's a schedule he started as a 22-year-old student at Columbia University in New York, and it immediately transformed him. In his 1995 autobiography, "Dreams From My Father," Obama said he was a casual drug user and an underachiever until he decided to start running three miles each day. He stopped staying out late, fasted on Sundays and became a voracious reader, spending most of his time alone in his apartment reading classic literature and philosophical texts.

Physical fitness yielded mental fitness, Obama decided, and the two concepts have been married in his mind ever since. (Washingtonpost.com) Let's go America and get in shape for the New Year and beyond!!
