NFL News: Dallas Cowboys Update - Jerry Makes it Official Names Garrett Head Coach

The wait and debate is over. The often enigmatic Dallas Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones called a press conference on Thursday afternoon to officially announce that he has removed the interim tag from Jason Garrett's head coach title making him only the eighth head coach in Cowboys franchise history.

Jones conducted a brief interview process which included a token interview for long time receiver's coach Ray Sherman to satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule (Rooney Rule explained)before making the move that many had opined was a foregone conclusion.

But, what does this move really mean for the fans?

Ahh yes, the fans. Those true-blue die-hard staunch supporters of the famed and self-proclaimed America's team have to be just giddy at the prospects of this new regime after a season of turmoil uncertainty and under-achieving players and coaches alike. With Garrett at the helm the team rebounded from their horrible 1-7 start to finish 5-3 and 6-10 overall. Not bad. But, a 6-10 season is not what Cowboys fans and the City of Arlington had in mind when the billion-dollar stadium and site of this year's Superbowl was opened a couple of years ago.

Jerry's assertion that Garrett will have the final say on not only his coaching staff but also the players on the field is refreshing and a first for the man who fired legends Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson for puppets such as Barry "Boomer Sooner" Switzer and the "Son of Bum" Wade Philips.

Unfortnately, the looming expiration of the NFL's current collective bargaining agreement with players casts a dark shadow on the upcoming 2011 season and could potentially result in a lockout. (Yahoo Sports)

Still for many, the hiring of Jason Garrett signifies more than just hope for the near future but also significant shift in coaching philosphy.

Garrett, a Princeton grad and former back-up to Troy Aikman, posesses a dynamic mix of youthful exuberance and tough-minded discipline that many believe will give these Dallas Cowboys the jolt they need to return to the glory days of the mid-90's.

Lockhart_Line 11.8 - DFW Sports Updates

Lockdawg returns to update the pitiful state of the DFW Sports market. If not for the Ranger's run to World Series, DFW fans wouldn't have anything to cheer about as the Stars are returning to their usual form after a hot start, the Mavs usually don't implode until the spring and that other semi-pro NFL team has just given up after they were shellacked against the Packers on Sunday night!!
