Jamaica's Usain Bolt celebrated both during and after winning the men's 200-meter final with a world record time in the athletics competitions in the National Stadium at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008. His freakishly fast time of 19.30 seconds in the 200-meter obliterated the field and Michael Johnson's previous world record time of 19.32 seconds set in the same 200-meter event at the Atlanta games in 1996.
"I've been dreaming of this since I was yea high," Bolt said. "So it means a lot more to me actually than the 100 means." (AP)
The now 22-year old (his birthday is today) is quite the sprinter and he isn't ashamed of being himself, "a character". He is often found dancing or playing practical jokes on his friends. Some of his favorite things are "sugar cane" "sweet potatoes" and "nuggets". Perhaps, more importantly to his athletic career though, he relishes the win. "I just wanted to win, I didn't care about the time" - Bolt said. (AP) Who's this guy kidding?
His smile and charisma are electro-magnets that should have many interested parties doing their best impression of the Jamaican star as they line up for the chance to take a bite out of "The Lightning Bolt". But, not so fast. His hot-dogging style leaves some with a sour taste in their mouths.
But c'mon, hands down the man is a beast. He knows it. And until somebody beats him, you gotta let him flaunt it. He's got youth and talent on his side so why not let it show? You only get the benefits of a 22-year old body once so there no reason he should have to put a top on his enthusiasm. You know, they don't say anything about the way Michael Phelps celebrates so don't hate on "insane Usain"! Myself like millions of others watched both races in sure amazment and he is flat out the fastest man I've ever seen and "To the victors go the spoils."
After the race yesterday Michael Johnson gave his comments on Usain's historic feat in the 200-meter final and had to eat a little crow. He had predicted that Bolt wouldn't break his record on would only finish with a 19. 5 time.
"Congratulations Usain Bolt. He got an incredible start. I looked at his start and just went wow. It was more amazing than the 100 metres ... Guys that tall should not be able to start like that ...," said Johnson.
"He wanted that record. This is his favorite event, he went for it, he came in focused on it, knowing he would most likely win the gold.
"My concern was he would not have the ability to hold that speed for the entire race but he showed he has been working on that. He used every ounce of energy, he wanted that record." (Reuters)
Now that he has secured the title of "World's Fastest Man", will Usain turn his eye towards the 400-meter? He doesn’t like running the 400 but a move up to the 400m might appear to be the logical next step for a man who, at 6 foot 5, seems tailor-made to be a one-lap runner. After 9.69 and 19.30, 42.5 seems sort of, well, possible?
“Don’t hold your breath,” says Bolt. “A lot of people keep suggesting I should be going up to 400,” he says. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it anytime soon. I don’t want to say anything too much because my coach might hear and want me to run it. But anything is possible.” (IAAF)
When Johnson ran his stunning 19.32 in Atlanta he was aged 28 and most knew that run represented the high water mark in his career. But with Bolt, still so young, what more can he can to achieve? Or should the question be, what more can't he achieve?
